The Other Energy Saving
Wednesday, March 12th, 2008For once we’re not talking the subtle energy (Qi, Ki, Prana…) that flows trough our body but the energy that comes out of your power sockets, kindly supplied by your electricity provider.
I just got a mail about www.ecogle.fr. It’s an attempt to save energy because they say that if Google had a black background instead of white it would save up to 750 megawatt-hours a year (26 turbines of the Three Gorges Dam in China). White pixels use more energy then black they say. It’s an idea, should be worth a try. I tested the search and it works fine, the black screen takes some getting use to.
Will I do a make-over on the EFT-Performance? Not likely, I really have a problem with black screens and reading from them. But maybe it’s just one of those pesky limiting beliefs!
I heard recently that doing one search query takes up as much energy as burning 1 economic light bulb for an hour. And internet traffic causes more CO2 emission than international flight traffic in a year! And I thought I was working in an ecologically-correct business (: I suggest to do small things like putting to sleep our computer when not in use for a moment and shutting it down completely for the night (also the screens no longer on “stand by”) A thing that also helps is all the hifi-television equipment on a power interrupter and cutting off the power at night so nothing has a little stand-by light burning.
happy energy saving!
